Youth from All Saints’ will be participating in the diocesan summer mission trip, with a group called Sierra Service Project (SSP). The middle school trip (for those entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall) will be to a Native American reservation in McDermitt, Nevada, July 29 to August 3, and the high school trip (for those entering 9th to those who just graduated) will be to South Los Angeles, July 29 to August 4.
SSP is a non-profit organization providing life-changing experiences through acts of service. Youth are invited to experience the profound power of serving people who have a culture and life experience different from their own. Church youth groups from all over the western states travel to one of the summer sites for an unforgettable week of serving, learning, worship and fellowship. Youth from many denominations are all a part of SSP’s mission work. If you know a young person who is not associated with our parish who would be interested, they are welcome to join us as well!
The cost per participant is $460, however we will do fundraising to offset this cost. If you are willing to commit to going or to sending your student, please contact Robin as soon as possible, as the first sign-up deadline is already past! You may call Robin on her cell phone, 805-835-8538, or send an e-mail to: email@example.com.
We do repair work on the homes in the communities we serve. The type of work includes home weatherization, building wheelchair ramps and porches, roofing, and interior and exterior painting, and training occurs on site. Work is done in teams of six to eight youth and adult counselors mixed from all the participating churches. Teams work at a home site about six hours daily and have one recreation afternoon. Evening activities include singing, cultural programs, worship, and games.
The Los Angeles urban immersion experience takes place in the neighborhoods of South Los Angeles. The service experience is enhanced by a day of exploring the city, visiting social services agencies, visiting Skid Row, and spending an evening at the beach.
The Paiute-Shoshone Tribes, Fort McDermitt, Nevada, is located on the Nevada-Oregon border. It is a small, rural, and relatively isolated community where we will perform home repairs and experience the local culture. Learn more about SSP on their website: http://www.sierraserviceproject.org.
