Dorothy's Kitchen volunteers, April 2012

By Robin Denney−

Eleven people participated in the first monthly youth and family service day, on April 21. We prepared and served the meal at Dorothy’s Kitchen in Salinas for 175 people. We made spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, garlic bread, and oranges, and served dessert. We also made tuna sandwiches and peanut butter sandwiches for people to take with them.

The staff at Dorothy’s kitchen were so helpful, and we had a great time with them. It was a blessing to get to interact with the people we were serving, and hear some of their stories.

In our discussion afterward, some of the youth mentioned how surprised they were by the kindness that the patrons showed to each other and to us. “Everyone said thank you, and no one would take the last piece of pie, they kept saying ‘I’ll leave that for the next person in line.’”

We worked hard. We laughed. We made delicious food. We prayed. We served. We met Christ there at Dorothy’s Kitchen.

Join us next month! Save the date: May 19, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. We will be doing either gleaning or a garden project, with the end goal of producing food for the hungry. Contact Robin Denney, using the website contact form.
