Elkhorn Slough Hike
There are three areas for hiking. The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve has five miles of hiking trails that meander through a variety of habitats from oak woodlands to mudflats. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on the trails. The Moss Landing Wildlife Area has a short, easy trail that is adjacent to the main channel of the slough. Bring your camera, as it is a good place to watch sea otters, harbor seals, and migrating birds. Kirby Park has a wheelchair-accessible trail. We will decide which route(s) depending upon who is coming. We will meet at the church to carpool. From Carmel the trip is twenty-one miles and twenty-five minutes north. We can look for lunch at Moss Landing or bring a picnic lunch.
Sunday, January 20, at Asilomar State Beach—We’ll meet at church after the 10:30 service and return around 2:00 p.m. The coast trail extends a mile along the beach, and several side paths fork to tide pools and pocket beaches. Sea otters, sea lions, seals, and migrating California grey whales are sometimes seen from vantage points along the trail. Bring binoculars and cameras!

Eucharist at New Camaldoli Hermitage and hike at Limekiln trails
Limekiln Trails is in Big Sur, two miles south of Lucia (where the New Camaldoli Hermitage is). It is one-hour drive south from Carmel. The trail has three branches each about a half mile long. Total hiking is two to three easy miles, a fairly level walk through towering redwoods along several lush creeks. The trails are well maintained and are child-friendly, though some people have been known to get their shoes wet while crossing the creeks on their way to see the spectacular 100′ waterfall. Another spur of the park allows you access to the coast on a scenic rocky beach under the shadow of Highway One. Dolphins have been seen frolicking in the waves 100 yards offshore there in January. Bring a picnic lunch.
