Janet Diane Dalton, daughter of James and Janet Dalton, was born January 20, 1929 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After attending All Saints’ School and Washington High School she continued her education at the University of Iowa, Macalester College, and the Barbizon School of Modeling in New York.

Diane married John T. Nelson Jr. in 1950 and raised her family in Sioux Falls. As a long-time resident of the historical McKennan Park area, she donated years of service to the McKennan Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed the company of close friends through hobbies such as Mahjongg and needlepoint.

Following the death of her husband in 1982, she married James Ellis and resided in Carmel, California for the past 27 years. She was an extremely active member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Carmel, where she served as its wedding coordinator for the past 25 years.

Diane is survived by her husband, James, sons J. Tom Nelson (Diane) of Lehi, Utah, James D. Nelson of Sioux Falls, daughter Jane Nelson Kannas of Watertown, South Dakota, 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and a brother, James Dalton of Carmel, California.

A memorial service was held at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral at 11 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2013. A private interment was held at St.Michael’s Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Children’s Care Hospital & School Foundation.
